HANNOVER, Germany - Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) and Novatel Wireless, Inc. (Nasdaq:NVTL) today announced that they will supply T-Mobile Germany with Merlin U530™ Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) PC card modems -- jointly developed by Lucent and Novatel Wireless -- for the operator's third-generation (3G) UMTS network in Austria, Germany and UK. Under the terms of a multi-million dollar supply agreement, Lucent and Novatel Wireless will supply the Merlin U530 PC Card Modems to support the commercial rollout of high speed data services on T-Mobile's 3G UMTS network.

The Merlin U530 PC Card Modem will enable T-Mobile to offer their enterprise and consumer customers enhanced services such as high-quality streaming video and audio, secure mobile access to e-mail with large attachments and other information stored behind corporate firewalls at data transfer speeds of up to 384 kilobits per second. By plugging the PC cards into a laptop and installing the necessary client software, network users will be able to access T-Mobile's UMTS network.

"T-Mobile is a leader in the introduction of cutting edge wireless services in Europe," said David Poticny, president, Lucent Europe. "These services are particularly attractive to business users, and we are pleased to continue supporting T-Mobile as the company develops 3G high-speed data and multimedia services on its network."

"Adding T-Mobile, the largest wireless operator in Germany, to our growing list of UMTS customers further solidifies the key role our high-speed solutions play in building the broadband wireless market," said Peter Leparulo, chief executive officer for Novatel Wireless. "We are pleased to work with T-Mobile and Lucent to meet the growing demand in the European market for greater access to complex information while on the move."

The contract follows T-Mobile's recent evaluation of its joint UMTS pilot network in Nuremberg with Lucent. The trial has demonstrated the readiness of Lucent's UMTS offer and the benefits of the UMTS high-speed data solution for end users from T-Mobile's enterprise customers such as Datev and Sandata. Lucent's UMTS solution offered these customers benefits such as an average 11% increase per week in customer facing time, more effective out of office productivity and increased sales potential.

T-Mobile is demonstrating the Merlin U530 in Deutsche Telekom's stand at CeBIT 2004, Hall 26, Stand A01. Lucent and Novatel Wireless are demonstrating 3G UMTS services using the Merlin U530 cards and Lucent's end-to-end UMTS infrastructure in Lucent's stand at CeBIT 2004, Hall 27, Stand B38. Among the high-speed data applications shown will be e-mail, access to the Lucent intranet through a virtual private network (VPN), video-conferencing and roaming between UMTS and WLAN. Visitors will also be able to experience a "Smart Client" application, directing users to the UMTS network of choice - whether the most cost-efficient or the fastest network.
