Lucent Technologies Introduces Latest Software Release For Its End-To-End UMTS/Wideband-CDMA High Speed Data Solution

MAY 28, 2003

MURRAY HILL, N.J. - Lucent Technologies today introduced the latest software release for its end-to-end high-speed data solution for third-generation (3G) Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) networks, also known as Wideband-Code Division Multiple Access (W-CDMA). This comprehensive software solution enables mobile operators to provide data services at speeds of up to 384 kilobits per second (kbps), and delivers exceptional levels of reliability and system performance.

Lucent’s UMTS/W-CDMA high-speed data solution is designed to enable mobile operators to provide enterprises and consumers with super-fast data connections – comparable to DSL or cable modem -- via laptop computers and PDAs equipped with specially designed UMTS/W-CDMA wireless modem cards.

"Our latest commercial UMTS/W-CDMA software release is focused on the enterprise and small or home office markets and delivers all of the critical features that UMTS/W-CDMA operators are looking for as they begin to roll out commercial data services, including a number of unique security and provisioning features specifically designed to address the needs of enterprise customers," said Roger Derrien, vice president for UMTS product management with Lucent’s Mobility Solutions Group. "Our solution also delivers the levels of quality and reliability that mobile operators demand; we believe our high-speed data solution is the best in the industry."

Lucent has conducted a rigorous testing program to ensure that its UMTS/W-CDMA high-speed data solution can meet mobile operators’ stringent performance requirements. Performance testing conducted in Lucent’s labs and in customer networks has consistently demonstrated exceptional levels of reliability and stability. Additionally, the system demonstrates extreme dependability managing one of the most critical challenges in the development of spread-spectrum networks, soft handoff – moving an end-user’s call from one base station to another, and maintaining the connection, as the caller travels throughout a coverage area.

Lucent’s UMTS/W-CDMA software is designed to support Lucent’s commercial-grade UMTS/W-CDMA infrastructure, including the Flexent® OneBTS™ base station, Flexent Radio Network Controller and core data networking solutions.

Lucent’s new software package also supports two different models of 3G UMTS/WCDMA wireless modem cards -- the Merlin U530™ Wireless PC Card Modem from Novatel Wireless, and the 3GlobeTrotter™ PCMCIA card from Option -- as well as a wide variety of other mobile devices. The package also incorporates software tools that enable an enterprise user to quickly and easily activate high-speed mobile data services. Lucent’s commercial release also is supported by a comprehensive suite of deployment and performance tools that allow for accelerated network installations and constant monitoring of overall network performance.

Lucent’s UMTS/WCDMA high-speed data solution is generally available for deployment by mobile operators worldwide.
